Promoting Desistance: Transforming Community Supervision for Lasting Change

December 5, 2024

This training on December 5, 2024, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. ET, aimed to empower community supervision professionals with a comprehensive understanding of desistance, enhancing their ability to foster sustainable change and safer communities.

On December 5, 2024, from 1 p.m. ET, the CSRC held a webinar on promoting desistance to transform community supervision.

Participants learned to differentiate between desistance and recidivism, recognizing how these metrics influence the evaluation of outcomes in community supervision. They critically assessed the limitations of recidivism as a measurement while articulating the advantages of a desistance-focused approach, which fosters more effective rehabilitation and community integration.

Additionally, the training addressed policies and practices that may impede desistance, encouraging participants to analyze their impact on rehabilitation. Finally, attendees explored and recommended innovative, evidence-based strategies that promote desistance, equipping them to implement positive change in their professional roles.
