Firm, Fair, and Caring Officer-Offender Relationships Protect Against Supervision Failure
by Law and Human Behavior
Quasi-experimental study exploring how high-quality dual-role relationships—those that combine a strong therapeutic alliance with elements of procedural justice—between community supervision officers and individuals under supervision impact recidivism, finding that firm, fair, and caring relationships significantly protect against rearrest even after accounting for people’s pre-existing personality traits and assessed likelihood of recidivism.
